While none of the record companies listed on the Music Site Guide are "big record companies," they are at least reasonably sized independent labels, often with at least a few recognizable artists on their rosters.

Needless to say, there are many, many other, smaller record companies out there offering free MP3s. The Smaller Labels Page is not a list of all of them.
Rather, the Smaller Labels Page features a list of smaller record companies I have come across that appear to have some worthy free-and-legal MP3 offerings. I can't vouch for the consistency of the quality, but if a site is listed here, that means there are at least a couple of pretty good songs to be found there.
As the number of labels listed on this page has grown over time, I decided it would be useful to divide them into two groups--basically an "A" list and a "B" list. This is always an inexact science, but the intention is that those on the "A" list will be labels that are closer in spirit and quality to those on the Music Site Guide. This doesn't mean there isn't good music available from "B" list labels, but if, for instance, you have a limited amount of time to poke around, the "A" list is the recommended place to start.
